The Kerry GAA has said it is fully determined to redevelop Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium to establish a world class venue that will attract major events.
The plan is to create a shared space that will support Kerry’s economy and benefit the community for years to come.
In a statement issued following approval of a €6 million government grant to upgrade a section of the Michael O’Connor Terrace, the Kerry GAA said its vision for the stadium is rooted in a commitment to enhancing the sporting experience for players and supporters and creating a positive impact on the wider community.
“The €6 million allocation will allow us to upgrade the existing terrace at the scoreboard end of Fitzgerald Stadium. However, as we look ahead to our ambitious plans for a full redevelopment – which are projected to cost €77 million – we understand that there is still much work to be done,” the statement read.
“Kerry GAA remains committed to exploring all available avenues to secure the additional funding necessary to make our dream for Fitzgerald Stadium a reality,” the county board executive stated.
In addition to thanking the politicians involved in lobbying for the grant aid, the GAA – spearheaded by Killarney businessman Patrick O’Sullivan – has reserved a special acknowledgment for Kerry County Council, CEO Martin O’Donoghue, and his team of directors, who have backed this project from the very start.
“We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering support from our local community, whose passion for Gaelic games and commitment to this project have been nothing short of inspiring,” the statement read.
It said the €6 million allocated from the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund marks an important milestone and brings the vision for a state-of-the-art facility one step closer.
