Young soccer stars show rich promise in summer sevens

THE future of the game of soccer in Killarney is assured as was very much in evidence at the Killarney Athletic AFC-Killarney Credit Union underage seven-a-side finals in Woodlawn last night.

There were some fantastic individual and team performances on show with players from Under 10 all the way up to Under 16 competing in the deciders.

At Under 10 level The Dream Team registered a 2-0 victory over The Auctioneer’s Boys who had only six players to call on for the final.

The Johnny Heffernan Memorial Shield for Player of the Tournament went to Under 16 star Dylan Moriarty of Dorrian’s Disciples. The trophy is presented here by Johnny’s daughter Sandra

Try though they might, the six lads eventually gave way as the Dream Team were just too powerful for them with their goalkeeper Dara Whelton getting the under 10 player of the tournament.

The Under 12 final finished 1-1 between Hardly Athletic and The Hammers – Brian O’Shea netting for Athletic and JJ O’Donoghue replying for The Hammers – with the latter triumphant after extra time and a drama-filled penalty shoot-out..

The award for the best player on show in the Under 12 tournament went to Seynom Jansinki.

The Under 14 encounter also finished level with Arctic Cactus and Classic 10 both failing to find the net in normal time and Classic 10 won 3-2 in extra time with Timothy Moynihan, Hugh Linehan and Alan O’Leary on target for Classic and Sam Buckley and Kalvin O’Sullivan finding the net for Arctic Cactus

Shay O’Meara received the Under 14 player of the tournament award.

The Under 16 final was much more clear-cup with Dorrian’s Disciples overcoming Lincoln Skins on a 4-1 scoreline. Cian McMahon was the scorer for Lincoln Skins with Aaron O’Shea, Keith Evans and a Dylan Moriarty brace sealing it for the champs.

The Under 16 player of the tournament went to Dylan Moriarty of Dorrian’s Disciples who received he Johnny Heffernan Shield in memory of a great Athletic clubman.

All the awards and trophies were presented by Helen Courtney Power from Killarney Credit Union.
