kerry gaa ballA KEY member of the management team that guided the Kerry minors to their stunning All-Ireland championship success has resigned, KillarneyToday.com can reveal.

Selector John Galvin has severed his ties with the squad that brought minor glory to the Kingdom for the first time in 20 years.

The former Dr Crokes star confirmed to KillarneyToday.com this Thursday night that he won’t be part of the management set-up next season, despite having completed just 12 months of a two-year term.

He said he has informed Kerry County Board chairman, Patrick O’Sullivan, of his decision but he refused to comment further on the matter.

“What I will say is that I won’t be back next year. I won’t add anything else to that,” he said.

Galvin had worked closely with team boss Jack O’Connor and selectors Micheál O’Shea and Eamon Whelan in this year’s campaign and they produced one of the most exciting and successful Kerry minor squads for decades.

They played some scintillating football on their way to the All-Ireland final and they overcame a stubborn Donegal outfit in the decider, on a 0-17 to 1-10 scoreline.

Galvin’s knowledge of young players in the greater Killarney area was very beneficial and Dr Crokes duo, Micheál Burns and Jordan Kiely, as well as Liam Kearney and Dan O’Donoghue from Spa, played major roles in Kerry’s first championship success for decades.

The Killarney building contractor is a vastly experienced GAA coach and he managed Dr Crokes for two seasons before taking over the South Kerry divisional side that won the county championship in 2009.

An All-Ireland Club Championship medal winner with Dr Crokes in 1992, he was a former Kerry minor and also lined out with the senior team on a number of occasions in the 1990s.
