HE once turned down a role in the smash hit fantasy series Game of Thrones but actor Dominic West couldn’t resist an offer to read the 1916 Proclamation at a commemoration in Kerry on Saturday.

The English actor and director was invited to attend the event in Ballybunion by former minister, Jimmy Deenihan, and as he has strong Kerry and west Limerick connections, he was delighted to accept.

West is married to Catherine FitzGerald who is a daughter of Desmond FitzGerald, the 29th Knight of Glin.

The 46-year-old screen star, best known for his role as Detective McNulty in the popular drama series The Wire, won the leading actor BAFTA in 2012 for his brilliant portrayal of serial killer Fred West in Appropriate Adult.

His film credits include The Awakening, Centurion, 300, Chicago and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

He also received a Golden Globe nomination for his part in the American drama series The Affair.

West will read the Proclamation at Saturday’s event in Scoil Iosagáin, Ballybunion which is a commemorationin honour of Michael Mulvihill, Ballyduff, The O’Rahilly, Ballylongford, and Patrick Shortis Ballybunion, who died in the Rising.

Guest speakers on the day will include Judge Richard Johnson, who is a nephew of Patrick Shortis, Michael Mulvihill who is a grandnephew of Michael Mulvihill and Ruth Sweetman, the granddaughter of The O’Rahilly.
