Scoring the all-important goal to help your club to win the Kerry Club Senior Football Championship final for the first time in six years – how’s that for a 21st birthday present?
Opportunist corner forward Cian McMahon unwrapped it and enjoyed it and when his first shot at goal was parried, he persisted and calmly slotted it to the net to give Dr Crokes a lead they never relinquished.
The former Kerry minor and under 20 star got the key of the door and he used it to unlock the Dingle defence with his brilliantly timed goal that gave Crokes the initiative they needed to bring the game to the reigning club champions.
At the final whistle Pat O’Shea’s up-for-it charges ran out comfortable winners by a seven point margin at Austin Stack Park in Tralee.
McMahon, of course, comes from great footballing stock with dad, Karl, a mainstay in the Crokes’ forward division for many years and his mum, Áine, is the daughter of Ann and the late Paddy ‘Bomber’ O’Shea of the famous O’Shea family of O’Sullivan’s Place which is one of the great Dr Crokes footballing families.
Making it cause for a double celebration was the fact that Cian’s first cousin, Neil O’Shea, was also part of the big success on Sunday, lining out in the full back line for the newly crowned champions.
